PET Scan (Positron Emission Tomography) is an advanced imaging test used to evaluate how tissues and organs are functioning by detecting changes in cellular activity. A small amount of a radioactive tracer, commonly a glucose-based tracer, is administered before the scan. Because many cancer cells consume glucose at a higher rate than normal cells, PET imaging can help identify areas of abnormal activity. PET scans are also used in selected heart and neurological conditions and are often combined with CT imaging as a PET/CT scan for more precise anatomical information.

Tracer Administration & PET Imaging
A small amount of radioactive tracer is administered, usually through an intravenous injection. After an uptake period, you lie still on the scanning table while the PET scanner captures images of tracer activity throughout the body or the targeted area.
Image Analysis & Follow-Up
A nuclear medicine specialist or radiologist interprets the images, often alongside CT or MRI findings, and provides a detailed report to your treating physician.

Before Procedure
- You may be asked to fast for several hours before the scan, depending on the type of PET examination.
- Your blood glucose level may be checked, particularly for FDG-PET scans.
- You should inform your medical team about pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes, medications, and any relevant medical conditions.
During Procedure
- The radioactive tracer is administered through an intravenous injection.
- You usually rest quietly for approximately 30–60 minutes while the tracer distributes through the body.
- The scan itself may take around 20–45 minutes, during which you need to remain still.
After Procedure
- Most patients can return home and resume normal activities after the scan unless otherwise instructed.
- Drinking plenty of fluids can help your body eliminate the tracer through urine.
- The radioactive tracer naturally loses its activity and is eliminated from the body, with the radiation exposure kept as low as reasonably achievable.
